Water Purifier : Types and Benefit
Water Purifier: Types and Benefit
Water purifier is an apparatus or device used to clean water by removing impurities, contaminants, and harmful substances so that it is safe for use and consumption, it can be used to filter out contaminants such as chemicals, bacteria and suspended solid. It traps particles, bacteria and making water safe to drink.

Types of Water Purifier
1. Reverse Osmosis (RO) Purifiers: -
- Utilizes a semi-permeable membrane for the elimination of dissolved salts, heavy metals, and impurities.
- Best for use in places with hard water.
- Electrifies and results in some wastewater.
2. Ultraviolet (UV) Purifiers: -
- Uses UV radiation for the killing of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.
- Does not filter out dissolved solids or heavy metals.
- Ideal to use in locations with microbiologically unsafe water but low TDS (Total Dissolved Solids).
3. Ultrafiltration (UF) Purifiers: -
- Utilizes a membrane to sieve bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms.
- Functions without electricity.
4. Activated Carbon Purifiers: -
- Uses carbon filters to eliminate chlorine, pesticides, and taste.
- Does not eliminate dissolved solids or microbes.
- Utilizes activated carbon and UF for filtering water without electricity.
- Only apt for use where low TDS water is found.
- Low-cost and low maintenance.
- Removes particulate matter such as sand, dirt, and rust.
- Tends to be used as a pre-filter in other purification systems.
- Uses electric charges to destroy germs and bacteria.
- Typically used in conjunction with other filtration techniques.
Components of Water Purifier
1. Pre-Filter: -
- Removes bigger particles such as sand, dust, and rust.
- Protects the major filtration elements.
- Catches finer particles like dust, mud, and suspended solids.
- Extends the lifespan of other filters.
- Removes chlorine, odorous taste, organic chemicals, and pesticides.
- Enhances taste and odor of water.
- Removes dissolved salts, heavy metals, bacteria, and viruses.
- Operates by pushing the water through a semi-permeable membrane.
- Destroys bacteria, viruses, and microorganisms.
6. UF (Ultrafiltration) Membrane (In UF Purifier): -
- Filters out bacteria, cysts, and sediments.
- Functions without power.
- Improves taste and quality of the purified water.
- Filters out any remaining chemicals.
- Adds vital minerals such as calcium and magnesium.
- Balances the flavor and medical value of the water.
- Holds purified water for convenient use.
- Made of food-grade plastic or stainless steel in most cases.
- Pump raises water pressure for the RO membrane.
- Solenoid valve regulates water flow.
- Shuts off water purification when the tank is full.
- Avoids water wastage and electrical damage.
Benefits of Water Purifier
1. Eliminates Contaminants: -
- Destroys harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
- Filters out heavy metals such as lead, arsenic, and mercury.
- Eliminates chemicals such as chlorine, pesticides, and industrial chemicals.
2. Enhances Water Taste & Odor: -
- Removes chlorine and other compounds causing bad taste and odor.
- Delivers fresh and clean-tasting water.
3. Encourages Better Health: -
- Prevents waterborne illnesses such as diarrhea, typhoid, and cholera.
- Maintains kidney health by minimizing toxic components in water.
4. Saves Money: -
- Reduces the cost of medicine by minimizing water-borne illnesses.
- Minimizes plastic usage from bottled water.
- Promotes sustainable consumption of natural resources.
- Delivers clean drinking water at home 24/7.
- Certain purifiers maintain essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium.
