water transportation refers to the movement of people and goods over water using various types of vessels, it is international movement of water over large distance, it can be categorized into inland, water ways and ocean transport, it refers to taking water from treatment of plant to consumer and sources of purification plant, it involves area of consumption.

  • Slower than air and road transport.
  • Weather-dependent, affected by storms and rough seas.
  • Limited accessibility; requires ports and terminals.
  • High initial investment in ships and port infrastructure.
  • High cost for maintaining, constructing and dredging canals.
Types of Water Transportation

Inland Water Transport: -
  • It is the process of carrying goods and passengers within a country through rivers, canals, and lakes.
  • Examples: Ferries, barges, boats
  • Advantages: Low cost, environment friendly
  • Disadvantages: Slow speed, seasonal operation (freezing in winter)
Ocean/marine transport: -

  • Includes international and long-distance transport overseas and oceans.
    Examples:
    Bulk carriers, 
    Includes cargo ships, tankers, container ships, cruise ships, and naval vessels.
  • Examples: Bulk carriers-carrying coal, grain, ores.
  • Container ships-carrying goods in large containers
  • Oil tankers-carrying crude oil and petroleum.
  • Passenger ships (ferries, cruise ships).
